The Â鶹´«Ã½’s new Chair of the Board, former Director General of the House of Commons, Ian Ailles, has officially taken over the reins at his first Board meeting.

Mr Ailles replaces Mark Pendlington, who has retired from the University Board after a term of nine years. Mr Pendlington is currently the High Sheriff of Suffolk and will continue to be a Pro-Chancellor of the University.

Mr Ailles brings with him diverse and extensive experience from a career that has included roles in the public and private sectors, including time in the NHS, Thomas Cook and City & Guilds. He has also recently taken up a new role as Chair of the Haven House Hospice in Essex.

Commenting on his Â鶹´«Ã½ role, Mr Ailles said: “I am delighted to be joining the University at this time as Chair of the Board and I am very much looking forward to my role.

“The Â鶹´«Ã½ has a very exciting future ahead of it which will build upon its fresh and innovative approach to higher education and will continue to grow its already very significant local economic impact. I look forward to working with the Vice-Chancellor, the board and the senior leadership team to establish Suffolk as a University of choice for undergraduate, postgraduate and international students, whilst continuing to grow its recognised research base.

“I have been impressed by what I have seen so far of the University, particularly the way in which it has made significant transformative strides forward whilst playing to its strengths.

“These strengths are firmly based in its locality, in its approach to diversity and inclusion, and in its partnerships with local organisations.”

Professor Helen Langton MBE, Vice-Chancellor at the Â鶹´«Ã½ said: “We are very pleased to welcome Ian as our new Chair of the Board.

“Ian’s experience of various sectors, both past and present, will be a huge asset to the Â鶹´«Ã½ and we look forward to working with him.”
