Dr Carmen Ortiz is an experienced Academic English and Academic Skills teacher, who is passionate about providing students with the appropriate tools to reach their potential and succeed academically. She has taught students from a wide range of backgrounds and levels, including Foundation Programme, undergraduate, master’s and PhD students.

Carmen holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Trinity College Dublin. Her doctoral research investigated the language-related challenges experienced by international students in Irish universities and how in-sessional support can help overcome those. She also holds a BA (Hons) in English Studies from Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha and a MSc in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Queen’s University Belfast.

Carmen works with students on a one-to-one basis to deliver tailored in-course sessions and academic skills workshops. Areas taught include academic writing, referencing and avoiding plagiarism, structure, cohesion and coherence, criticality, academic presentations, assignment planning, and English as a second language, among others.
